**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about the future that awaited me. I was about to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had been particularly shy and introspective, venturing into the unfamiliar was indeed outside of my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on a year rich with development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments, I recognize how profoundly this experience has shaped me. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most intimidating parts of beginning university was the challenge of forming friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, you may be experiencing similar feelings. I certainly was. On my inaugural day in student housing, just prior to the term officially starting, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to my peers.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever known. These bonds have become my second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with small gestures—such as engaging in light conversation with others who were just as apprehensive as I was.
What have I taken away from this journey? First, it’s essential to take that initial step of faith, even if it feels uneasy. If you’re not prepared right away, fret not—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with new people throughout the academic year. Secondly, the best approach is to simply be yourself. Given the vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and ideals.
### Addressing the Academic Trials
Adjusting to the academic pressures of university posed another considerable challenge. The leap from A-levels to university-level coursework was distinct, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more rigorous. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving peers.
What aided me in overcoming this struggle was the realization that I wasn’t in this alone. Everyone around me was navigating similar waters, and if I encountered difficulties understanding something, it was likely that others were struggling too. The crucial lesson here is to seek assistance—whether from your peers or the teaching staff. Learning to ask for support is arguably the most important skill you can hone during your initial year.
### The Value of Supportive Staff
On the subject of support, the faculty within the Materials Science and Engineering department have been remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open communications, addressing our concerns and offering guidance.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support at my disposal until the end of the year, and I wish I had realized its importance sooner. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative at the beginning of the year was one of the bold choices I made, and it became a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which became incredibly valuable.
If there’s one piece of advice I can impart, it’s to utilize the support structures accessible to you. Whether it’s academic assistance, pastoral care, or simply getting acquainted with your lecturers, you can never have too much backing.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to and during university—was often unwarranted. With the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I was rarely genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to navigate the stress from exams and deadlines while also embracing moments of joy and fun.
Thus, to anyone preparing to embark on their own university adventure: take the plunge, welcome the challenges, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You might just amaze yourself with how much you can evolve in the process.
