**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubt about the future. I was about to begin my adventure as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been quite introverted, entering the unknown was not an experience I was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year marked by personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. But what insights has this past year imparted, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. For many new students, this remains a primary worry when beginning university life. I vividly recall my first day settling into my new accommodation—before the term officially began, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly declare that I’ve secured some of the most amazing friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve met during this time have become akin to a second family for me. All it necessitated was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others in a similar situation.

So, what have I learned from this experience? I realized that taking the first step at the beginning of the year is always a rewarding endeavor. If you’re not prepared or at ease immediately, don’t stress—there are numerous opportunities and events to help facilitate connections. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is crucial. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’ll inevitably find people who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Another major challenge was acclimating to the increased workload and complexity of the course material. The shift from A-levels to university was quite stark, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you’re surrounded by high-achievers.

What aided me during this period was realizing that everyone is facing similar hurdles. If you find yourself struggling with a concept, chances are others are as well. The best course of action is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning how to ask for support is undoubtedly one of the most valuable skills I acquired during my first year.

### The Value of Supportive Staff

Speaking of support, the personnel in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely care about students thriving and demonstrate understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication open, addressing our worries and providing assistance.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. At the year’s onset, I took a leap by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This opportunity allowed me to foster connections with staff members, which turned out to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My most significant takeaway? Utilize the support available—you can never have too much help!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve come to realize that much of the anxiety I experienced before and during university was largely unfounded. With the extensive support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly on my own. This year has taught me how to balance the stresses of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.

As I look forward, I feel more assured and enthusiastic about what lies ahead. My first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey, and I eagerly anticipate how the rest of my adventure will unfold.
