**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and doubt about the future. I was about to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and cautious, stepping into the unknown appeared to be a formidable obstacle. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I realize how impactful this experience has been. So, what discoveries have I made, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
A highly daunting challenge I encountered at the outset of my university experience was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may be one of your foremost worries as well. On my initial day in student housing, just a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted by the idea of initiating conversations with others.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both within my program and throughout the university—have come to feel like a second family to me. All it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and sparking small dialogues with others who were equally apprehensive.
What’s the lesson? Taking that first step is always worthwhile. If you’re not prepared immediately, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others will arise. Most importantly, embrace your true self. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to connect with those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major hurdle was adapting to the heightened workload and the intricacy of the subject matter. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second proved even more challenging. It’s easy to become disheartened or question your skills when you observe peers studying and thriving.
What assisted me through this was realizing that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re grappling with a topic, chances are that others are too. The essential strategy is to reach out for assistance—whether from your classmates or teaching personnel. Learning to seek help is arguably the most crucial skill I acquired during my first year.
### The Significance of Support and Connection
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials Science department are exceptional. They genuinely wish to see students succeed and are acutely aware of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they upheld open lines of communication with us and displayed understanding toward our difficulties.
I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the academic year was nearing its end, and I wish I had done so earlier. At the year’s commencement, I took a significant step by volunteering as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which proved immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with your lecturers and tutors, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience.
What’s my most important takeaway? Don’t hesitate to leverage the resources and support structures at your disposal. Whether it’s academic guidance or pastoral assistance, an abundance of support is always advantageous.
### Lessons Gained
Reflecting on this year, I have realized that the anxiety I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often uncalled for. Numerous support systems exist, from faculty to fellow students, designed to aid you in navigating the challenges.
I’ve come to understand that I’m never genuinely alone, and I have learned how to balance the academic pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment. Above all, I have matured as an individual, stepping beyond my comfort zone and seizing the opportunities that university life presents.
If you’re on the verge of beginning your university adventure, understand that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious. But also recognize that with the right attitude and support, you’ll navigate your path—and perhaps even enjoy the time of your life.
