**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty as I geared up to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Being an inherently shy and introverted individual, plunging into this new phase of my life seemed daunting. Now, reflecting on a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment, I can acknowledge the knowledge I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the need to forge new friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might resonate with these feelings. On my inaugural day in student housing, merely a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly assert that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The pivotal moment occurred when I opted to take a risk and initiate casual conversations with others in similar situations. Gradually, those initial exchanges grew into significant friendships, and I now consider myself part of a second family here at Imperial.

What did I take away from this journey? First and foremost, taking that initial risk at the beginning of the year is worthwhile, even if it appears intimidating. If you’re not ready immediately, don’t fret—there will be an abundance of icebreaker activities and chances to bond with peers. Above all, stay true to yourself. With such a varied community of students, you’re certain to connect with individuals who share your passions and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Obstacles

Adapting to the demands and complexity of university-level coursework posed another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more profound. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when observing others study and wondering if you’re keeping pace.

What aided me during these times was realizing that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re wrestling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are facing the same struggle. The crucial factor is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. This is perhaps the most valuable lesson I learned in my first year: don’t hesitate to seek help.

### Establishing Connections with Faculty

Regarding support, the faculty in the Materials department are truly exceptional. They genuinely desire for students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained an open dialogue with us, addressing our concerns and providing direction.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. Early on, I stepped up by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to collaborate closely with staff members. This experience proved invaluable, and I highly recommend exploring ways to engage with faculty, whether through similar roles or attending office hours. The support they provide exists for a purpose—don’t shy away from utilizing it.

### Lessons Gained

As I reflect on my first year, I’ve come to realize that much of the anxiety I felt—both prior to and during university—was unwarranted. Numerous support systems are in place, from faculty to fellow students, to assist you in navigating this new chapter.

This year has enlightened me that I’m never truly isolated, even in moments of uncertainty. It has shown me how to manage stress arising from exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and camaraderie. Most importantly, it has reinforced the idea that growth frequently comes from taking risks, even when they initially appear intimidating.

To anyone poised to begin their university adventure: embrace the challenges, lean on the support surrounding you, and don’t forget to relish the experience.
