**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed by nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my venture as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had been somewhat introverted and quiet, this leap into a new chapter was quite intimidating. Now, as I ponder over the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, trials, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where am I now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most significant obstacles I encountered initially was the challenge of making friends. For many incoming students, this can be one of the most frightening elements of beginning university. I recall spending my first day in student housing lingering in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced.

The turning point occurred when I urged myself to start small conversations with others who were experiencing the same feelings I was. Gradually, these exchanges evolved into genuine friendships, and I now view my friends at Imperial as an extension of my family.

What lesson did I draw from this? Firstly, taking that first leap of faith is essential, even if it feels daunting. If you aren’t quite ready at the beginning, don’t be disheartened—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Secondly, staying true to yourself is paramount. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and principles.

### Tackling Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the content was yet another major hurdle. The shift from A-levels to university-level coursework was distinct, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt particularly intense. It’s quite easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when witnessing others study and appear to thrive.

What assisted me in managing these challenges was the acknowledgment that I wasn’t solitary. Everyone was grappling with similar issues, and if I was struggling with a concept, it likely meant that others were too. The crucial takeaway? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty, reaching out for support can have a tremendous impact.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of support, I must highlight how remarkable the staff in the Materials department truly are. They genuinely desire the success of their students and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and offered multiple forms of assistance.

While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support accessible until later in the year, I wish I had sooner. One of the wisest choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are abundant opportunities to engage with staff, and I strongly suggest seizing them. My major takeaway? Don’t hesitate to utilize the resources and assistance available—you can never have too much support.

### Takeaways
Reflecting on this year, I have realized that the apprehension I felt before beginning university—and even throughout the year—was mostly unwarranted. With the extensive support from both faculty and peers, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines while still enjoying moments of happiness and fun, and I’ve grown in ways I never anticipated.

To anyone gearing up to commence their university experience: welcome the challenges, take those leaps of faith, and keep in mind that help is always close at hand.
