**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what awaited me. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unknown felt far outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on a year that was rich in personal development, challenges, and memorable experiences, I realize just how impactful it has been. So, what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the outset of university was the task of making friends. For numerous incoming students, this is a major concern, and I was no different. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days prior to the commencement of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to emerge and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve encountered here have become my second family, within my major and across the institution. It all began with brief, straightforward conversations with others who were equally anxious.
What did this teach me? Taking a bold step at the beginning of the year is invariably worthwhile. If you’re not completely prepared or comfortable right away, don’t be alarmed—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Most crucially, be authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you will surely find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more demanding. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and ponder whether you’re keeping pace.
What aided me through this phase was the understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The essential thing is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or academic staff. Learning to request help is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.
### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of support, the faculty within the Materials Science department have been remarkable. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and show understanding of the challenges we navigate. Throughout the year, they fostered open communication with us, addressing our worries and providing valuable guidance.
I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until late in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. Early on, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, which allowed me to forge connections with staff members. This proved to be a priceless experience. There are myriad ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university life. My main takeaway? Don’t hesitate to tap into the support systems available to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Main Takeaways from My First Year
Looking back, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before commencing university—and even during it—was mostly unwarranted. With a broad spectrum of support options accessible from both staff and fellow students, help is always readily available. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to balance enjoying life with coping with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
As I advance, I’m eager to discover what the next phase of my university journey will bring. If there’s one piece of wisdom I’d offer to anyone starting their first year, it’s this: embrace the challenges, take those leaps of faith, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You’ll grow in ways you never thought possible.
