**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt a swirl of anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was on the verge of embarking on my first year as a student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been somewhat introverted, plunging into the vibrant world of university life was an intimidating notion. Now, as I contemplate my first year, I recognize it as a time of significant development, hurdles, and unforgettable memories. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the quest for friendship. Beginning university can be a lot to handle, and if you’re a future student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. On my inaugural day in student housing, mere days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day cocooned in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and make introductions.

Fast forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life here at Imperial. These relationships feel like a second family, and they originated from small gestures—like initiating conversations with others who were equally anxious.

What takeaway do I have? Taking a chance at the beginning of the year is absolutely worthwhile. If you’re not quite prepared, don’t fret—there will be ample social events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, just be true to yourself. With such a rich and varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover individuals who share your passions and principles.

### Adjusting to the Academic Shift

Another major hurdle was adapting to the academic demands and the leap in complexity from A-levels. The shift was evident, and the transition from the first semester to the second semester was even more distinct. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities when observing peers who seem to manage their studies effortlessly.

What assisted me was understanding that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, others likely are too. The critical lesson is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. Learning to ask for help may just be the most beneficial skill you can acquire in your first year.

### The Encouraging Staff

Speaking of instructors, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in the success of their students and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They keep lines of communication open and are always ready to respond to our queries.

I didn’t fully tap into the available support resources until the end of the year, but I wish I had engaged with them sooner. At the start of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This opportunity allowed me to cultivate connections with faculty members, which proved to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous avenues to interact with staff, and fostering these connections can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway? Utilize the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to realize that many of the apprehensions I held—both prior to and throughout university—were unwarranted. With the plethora of support options provided by staff and fellow students, help is always available when you require it. I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned to balance enjoying my time with managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.

As I progress, I feel a greater sense of confidence and readiness for the challenges ahead. My first year at Imperial has been a life-changing experience, and I eagerly anticipate what lies in store for the future.
