**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of embarking on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this fresh chapter was quite intimidating. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period that was not only demanding but also transformative, characterized by personal development, novel experiences, and abundant enjoyment. So, what have I gleaned, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered was forging friendships. Beginning university can be quite overwhelming, and if you’re an aspiring student reading this, it might be one of your key worries as well. On my initial day in student housing, a few days prior to the commencement of classes, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself.

Now, looking ahead, I can affirmatively say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who share my experiences and enhance my journey. What enabled me to reach this point? Taking that critical first step and engaging in light conversation with others who were equally anxious as I was.

What I discovered is that it’s invariably beneficial to step beyond your comfort zone early on. If you’re not quite prepared initially, fret not—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, simply be yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with you.

### Addressing the Academic Demands

Another notable challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened difficulty of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more intense. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when among high-achieving colleagues.

What aided me in maneuvering through this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The essential part is to seek help—whether it’s from your classmates or the teaching staff. Learning to reach out for assistance is arguably the most invaluable skill you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty

One of the standout aspects of my experience has been the remarkable assistance from the Materials department personnel. They sincerely desire for students to thrive and exhibit understanding towards the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our issues and offering direction.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until late in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold steps I took at the beginning of the year, and it turned out to be immensely gratifying. It allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which proved invaluable.

There are numerous ways to bond with faculty, and I strongly suggest making the most of these opportunities. Whether through formal responsibilities or casual encounters, nurturing those relationships can lead to significant benefits. My key takeaway? Never hesitate to utilize the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

As I reflect on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the apprehension I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was mostly unwarranted. With the extensive range of support options accessible from staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has imparted to me the ability to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and fulfillment.

As I progress, I am thankful for the personal growth, friendships, and lessons that this year has provided. If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, know that it’s perfectly normal to feel nervous. Take those leaps, embrace the obstacles, and remember—you’re never on this journey alone.
