**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxious excitement as I got ready to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As an individual who had always been introverted and quiet, jumping into university life felt challenging. Looking back now, I see a year that was enlightening—characterized by personal growth, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights did I gain, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the thought of forming new friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might be feeling similar apprehensions. I recall my first day in student housing, spending it in my room, too anxious to step out and meet anyone. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life here at Imperial.

What caused this shift? I took gradual steps, beginning with simple chats with individuals who were experiencing the same feelings. I discovered that taking an initiative early on—be it introducing yourself to someone new or participating in a social gathering—can be incredibly beneficial. And if you’re not quite ready yet, that’s perfectly fine! There are abundant icebreaker gatherings and chances to interact with others throughout the year. Most crucially, I found that authentic self-expression is essential. With such a rich and varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter people who share your passions and principles.

### Tackling Academic Challenges
Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another major challenge. The shift from A-levels to university-level studies was quite apparent, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe peers studying and apparently thriving.

What assisted me was coming to understand that I wasn’t alone in this feeling. Chances are, if you’re finding something difficult to grasp, others are experiencing similar challenges. The best advice I can offer is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. Learning to ask for help is one of the most important abilities you can develop during your freshman year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty
One of the remarkable facets of my journey has been the outstanding support from the Materials Science faculty. They sincerely wish for students to succeed and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication, addressing our issues and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had discovered it earlier. Stepping up as a year well-being representative was a bold move for me, but it turned out to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to forge strong relationships with faculty members, which proved invaluable. Whether through formal positions or casual encounters, getting to know your lecturers and tutors can greatly enhance your university journey. My main takeaway? Make the most of the resources and assistance available to you—you can never have too much support!

### Insights Gained
Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I harbored—both prior to and during university—were unfounded. With the extensive support available from staff and fellow students, I learned that I was never genuinely alone. More importantly, I figured out how to balance the demands of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and fun.

This year has been a journey of development, and I’m thankful for the challenges and opportunities that have arisen. To anyone on the brink of their own university adventure: take that leap, embrace the support around you, and trust that you will discover your niche.
