**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quiet and introverted, jumping into this new phase of life felt quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights has this year provided me, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was forming connections. If you are a prospective student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the official start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all began with casual conversations with others who were experiencing the same situation.

What did I take away from this? The crucial step is to take that first leap. If you’re not quite ready or at ease, don’t panic! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to meet new friends. Most importantly, just stay true to yourself. With such a varied student community, you’re bound to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Workload

Another major challenge was acclimating to the heightened workload and complexity of the course material. There was an apparent transition from A-levels, and an even steeper climb between the first and second terms. Being thrust into this environment can occasionally shake your confidence, particularly when you observe others engaging in their studies and feel as though you’re falling short. However, one aspect that assisted me was the realization that everyone is facing similar difficulties. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is perhaps the most vital lesson I acquired in my first year—reach out to your classmates and instructors for guidance!

### Assistance from the Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and are acutely aware of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, demonstrating empathy and understanding. I did not fully capitalize on the support services available until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier.

At the year’s beginning, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to build rapport with the faculty, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are many avenues to engage with staff, and I strongly suggest pursuing them. My primary takeaway from this experience is to make use of the support available to you. You can never have too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was mostly unfounded. There is a plethora of support accessible from both faculty and fellow students, and you are never genuinely alone. I’ve learned how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while also savoring the university experience, and I am eager to see what the upcoming years will bring.
