**Looking Back on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what the future held. I was on the verge of starting my first-year adventure in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As a person who had always been timid and introverted, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on the academic year, I recognize the growth I’ve experienced, the obstacles I’ve encountered, and the enjoyable moments I’ve shared along the journey. But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was the task of making new friends. This is a common concern for many new students, and I was certainly included in that group. On my first day settling into my residence, a few days prior to the semester’s commencement, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a supportive community, all sparked by engaging in casual conversations with others who were also feeling uncertain.
So, what was my takeaway? I realized that taking risks at the beginning of the year is essential, even if you’re not completely prepared. There will be numerous ice-breaking activities and gatherings to facilitate connections with others. Most significantly, I learned that authenticity is crucial. With a wide array of individuals within the course and the university, you will inevitably find those with whom you click.
### Navigating the Workload and Academic Difficulties
Another challenge I needed to confront was the sheer volume of work and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels was certainly steep, and there was an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in this new environment can really shake your self-assurance, particularly when you observe peers studying and feel you’re not keeping pace. However, here’s what proved helpful: recalling that we’re all navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The most crucial lesson I learned in my first year was the importance of seeking help—whether from classmates or faculty. Don’t hesitate to reach out!
### Assistance from the Faculty
On that note, the faculty in Materials Science is remarkable. They genuinely care about your success and are aware of the difficulties students encounter. Throughout the year, they kept an open line of communication regarding any challenges we faced. I didn’t take full advantage of the support services until late in the year, but I wish I had utilized them earlier.
At the start of the school year, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to build relationships with the staff, which has been invaluable. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty members, and this is one of the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself. My most significant lesson from this experience is to take full advantage of the available support. You can never receive too much assistance!
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was mostly baseless. An array of support systems exists, from staff to fellow students, to help alleviate those concerns. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to balance enjoyment with the unavoidable stress that comes with exams and deadlines.
