**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
A decade ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the upcoming journey. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had consistently been shy and introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar was an intimidating challenge. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, difficulties, and a great deal of enjoyment. But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current position?
### Forming Connections: The Initial Challenge
One of the most intimidating facets of commencing university was making connections. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probably a concern on your mind as well. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just days ahead of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can undeniably say I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known—friends who feel like family.
So, what have I discovered? I learned that taking that first step is vital. If you’re not ready or feel uneasy initially, don’t fret—there will be ample ice-breakers and activities designed to help you connect with your peers. Above all, be authentic. With so many diverse individuals within the course and university, you’re certain to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Confronting the Workload
Another major challenge was acclimatizing to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. There was certainly an elevation from A-levels, and the transition from the first term to the second was distinctly significant. It’s natural to feel swamped or doubt your capabilities when witnessing others study. But here’s the reality: everyone is navigating similar waters. If something is unclear, it’s likely many others are grappling with it too.
The most critical lesson I absorbed during my first year was to seek assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, don’t hesitate to ask for help. This straightforward action can significantly aid in overcoming academic hurdles.
### Assistance from Faculty
On the subject of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. They genuinely care about the success of students and comprehend the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the academic year, there was consistent dialogue between staff and students regarding any challenges we faced. While I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.
At the beginning of the year, I stepped out of my comfort zone by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position gave me the chance to connect with the staff more deeply, which was immensely rewarding. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it stands as one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. My primary takeaway? Utilize the support that’s at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxieties I experienced before and during university were mostly baseless. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I came to realize I was never truly alone. More crucially, I discovered how to manage stress from exams and deadlines while savoring the university experience.
