**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone with a naturally shy and reserved demeanor, venturing into the unknown felt like a daunting challenge. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year that was transformative—characterized by growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what have I gained, and where am I now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re a future student, this may also be one of your major concerns. On my inaugural day in student housing, just a few days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships of my life—friends who feel like an extended family.
How did I achieve this? It began with casual conversations and creating bonds with others who were experiencing the same feelings. My most significant realization? Take that initial leap at the start of the year. Even if you’re not yet ready or feel uneasy, there will be an abundance of icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. And above all, simply be yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Transition
Adapting to the demands and academic intensity was another considerable obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university-level material was striking, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more significant. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when observing others studying with assurance.
What assisted me in managing this was the understanding that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, chances are others are too. The crucial aspect is to seek assistance—be it from your classmates or academic staff. Learning to request help is arguably the most vital skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### Aid from the Materials Department
On the subject of staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and personnel genuinely aspire for students to thrive and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the year and are consistently available to provide assistance.
I didn’t take full advantage of the support available until the end of the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. Assuming the position of a year well-being representative was one of the bold moves I made early on, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. It enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved invaluable. Whether through formal positions or informal exchanges, getting acquainted with the staff is among the best actions you can take for your own benefit. My guidance? Utilize all the support provided—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This year has revealed to me that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to and during university—was largely unfounded. With the abundant support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned to balance the pressures from exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and laughter.
Looking back, my first year at Imperial has been a journey of growth, resilience, and connection. To all those about to embark on their own university journey: take the plunge, seek assistance, and embrace the experience. You might just astonish yourself with how far you can reach.
