**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Throwing myself into unfamiliar territory was not something my previously timid and reserved self was accustomed to. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I can recognize how much I’ve absorbed and how far I’ve advanced.

### Conquering the Fear of Building Connections

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might be feeling similarly. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just a few days before the term commenced, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like a second family. It simply required me to step out of my comfort zone and engage in small conversations with others who were in the same situation as myself.

What did I glean from this experience? Taking that initial leap at the start of the year is invaluable. If you’re not yet ready or at ease, don’t fret—there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Above all, be authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another considerable challenge was acclimating to the increased workload and enhanced complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more formidable.

It’s easy to become overwhelmed or suspect your capabilities when observing others studying and appearing to thrive. However, one thing that kept me anchored was the reminder that everyone is navigating similar circumstances. If you’re struggling to grasp something, chances are, others are grappling with it as well.

The most crucial lesson I learned in my first year is to seek assistance. Whether from peers or faculty staff, don’t hold back from reaching out. Cooperation and support are essential in managing the complexities of university life.

### The Importance of Supportive Faculty

On the subject of support, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They truly want students to succeed and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had done so sooner. Making the most of the resources and assistance provided by staff can profoundly impact your experience.

At the beginning of the year, I made a bold move by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to form connections with staff members, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and I highly encourage pursuing them—it’s among the best decisions you can make for yourself.

### Key Insights

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university—and even during the year—was largely baseless. There is a wealth of support available, both from staff and fellow students, to help you navigate any difficulties.

This year has taught me that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s feasible to find enjoyment alongside the pressures of exams and deadlines. University is a journey of personal growth, and while it may seem intimidating at first, it’s also profoundly rewarding.

So, to anyone gearing up to embark on their own university adventure: take the plunge, embrace the challenges, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You’ll be astounded at how much you’re capable of achieving.
