**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been timid and introverted, diving into the unknown was well outside my comfort zone. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it as a time filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous enjoyable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating obstacles I faced was forming friendships. For many new students, this is a primary concern about beginning university—and I was certainly no different. On my first day at the student housing, just a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships of my life.
These connections, which have become like a second family to me, developed through gradual steps—beginning with light, casual conversations with others who were equally hesitant. What did I glean from this? Taking that first step at the beginning of the year is vital. If you’re not immediately ready or at ease, don’t stress—there are ample ice-breaking events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, I discovered that authenticity is crucial. With so many varied individuals in the program and at the university, you’re sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the workload and the complexity of the course material was yet another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university life was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. Being immersed in such a rigorous environment can occasionally dampen your self-assurance, notably when you observe others seemingly flourishing while you struggle.
What aided me in navigating these difficulties was the recognition that everyone shares similar experiences. If you find a particular concept challenging, it’s likely that many others do as well. The most crucial lesson I gained in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from your classmates or academic staff, reaching out for help can truly make a difference.
### The Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science team at Imperial is outstanding. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, responding to our concerns and providing support.
Although I didn’t fully tap into the support resources until later in the academic year, I regret not doing so earlier. Stepping into the role of a well-being representative for my year was one of the initiatives I took early on. This position not only enabled me to contribute to the well-being of my peers but also allowed me to cultivate relationships with faculty members—something that proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with the staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support available to you. You can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Upon reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I felt—both before entering university and throughout the year—was often unfounded. The broad array of support options offered, from faculty to fellow students, made a substantial impact. This year has shown me that I’m never truly alone and that it’s entirely possible to embrace university life, even amidst the stress of exams and deadlines.
As I look ahead, I appreciate the challenges, growth, and friendships I have developed. To anyone about to embark on their own university adventure: take the plunge, seek guidance, and most importantly, be true to yourself.
