**Reflections on My First Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubt about the future. I was preparing to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, immersing myself in the university environment felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich in development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can appreciate how much I’ve learned and the progress I’ve made.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the challenge of forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student, this concern may resonate with you as well. I distinctly recall my initial day in student housing—I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet anyone. Fast forward to today, and I can assert that I’ve cultivated some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The breakthrough occurred when I chose to step outside my comfort zone and engage in casual conversations with those who were experiencing similar feelings. Gradually, I discovered a second family here at Imperial, both within my program and throughout the university. My most significant insight? Take the initiative early on. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy at first, there will be ample icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re bound to discover individuals who share your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Challenges
Adapting to the workload and complexity of university-level material was another major obstacle. The shift from A-levels to university was evident, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped or doubt your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving classmates, but I learned a crucial lesson: everyone is in the same situation.
If you’re having trouble grasping something, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial step is to seek help—whether that’s from your classmates or the teaching staff. Learning to ask for assistance is arguably the most valuable skill you can acquire in your first year.
### The Supportive Staff
Speaking of staff, the support system within the Materials department is outstanding. The lecturers and tutors are genuinely invested in our success and understand the challenges we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the year and address any concerns we present.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the first leaps I made, and it allowed me to build connections with staff members. Getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors is invaluable, and there are numerous ways to do so. My recommendation? Take full advantage of the support and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Key Takeaways
Looking back, this year has conveyed to me that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was frequently ungrounded. With the extensive support available from both staff and fellow students, I recognized that I was never truly on my own. I also learned to balance academic pressures, like exams and deadlines, with savoring life at university.
In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a journey of self-discovery, advancement, and connection. If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, know that feeling nervous is perfectly normal. Take those steps, embrace the challenges, and don’t hesitate to rely on the support that surrounds you. You’ll be surprised at how much you can accomplish.
