**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and doubt about what awaited me. I was on the brink of commencing my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally shy and introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar was definitely outside my comfort zone. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a period of significant personal development, hurdles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what have I gained from this year, and what is my current status?
### Conquering the Anxieties of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might resonate with my feelings—it’s a prevalent concern. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days ahead of starting term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, far too daunted to venture outside and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever had. The individuals I’ve connected with here have become my second family, both within the institution and in my program.
What lesson did I learn? I discovered that taking that first step is vital. Even if you feel unprepared or uneasy, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. And above all, just remain authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and principles. Sometimes, a little casual conversation can ignite a meaningful bond.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another considerable challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was evident, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. Maintaining confidence in such a demanding environment wasn’t always straightforward, particularly when it seemed others were comprehending concepts at a quicker pace than I was.
What assisted me in overcoming this was realizing that I wasn’t on this journey alone. Everyone was experiencing similar feelings, and if something was unclear to me, there was a good chance it was for others too. The essential takeaway? Don’t shy away from seeking assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or faculty, requesting help is one of the most crucial skills to hone in your first year.
### Backing from the Materials Department
On the topic of support, the personnel in the Materials Science and Engineering department are outstanding. They sincerely wish for students to flourish and are acutely aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered transparent communication with us and expressed understanding for our challenges.
Though I didn’t fully engage with the available pastoral support until late in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a chance by becoming a Year Well-being Representative. This position allowed me to cultivate relationships with staff, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are countless ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My primary takeaway? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal—you can never receive too much guidance!
### Takeaways
Looking back on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced prior to and during university was often unwarranted. There are abundant resources and support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, to aid you in navigating challenges. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve figured out how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and relaxation.
This year has been a transformative journey, and I’m enthusiastic about what lies ahead. To anyone beginning their university path, remember to take that leap, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance when necessary, and seize the opportunities that surround you.
