**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was awash with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and somewhat reserved, venturing into this new phase felt akin to diving off the deep end. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained from all this, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was the challenge of cultivating friendships. Entering university can be quite daunting, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s probably something you’re anxious about as well. On my initial day in student housing, just days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to today, and I’m pleased to say that I’ve forged some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve connected with here have become like a secondary family to me. All it took was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who shared my situation.
So, what was my takeaway? I recognized that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is vital. If you’re not completely ready or at ease, don’t fret—there will be numerous social events and chances to meet others. Above all, I discovered that being authentic is the best strategy. With such a diverse group of individuals in the program and the university, you’re likely to encounter those who align with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Transition
Another significant challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the coursework. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more daunting. It’s all too easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities, especially as you observe others studying and presume they have everything under control.
What assisted me during these times was the awareness that everyone is navigating the same waters. If you find yourself struggling with a concept, chances are others share that experience. The key is to seek assistance. This might be the most critical lesson I learned during my first year. Whether it’s reaching out to classmates or asking for help from faculty, requesting assistance is crucial.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the topic of faculty, I must highlight how incredible the Materials department team is. They are genuinely invested in students’ success and empathize with the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication with us and provided support whenever we needed it.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had accessed it sooner. Early in the year, I made a bold decision to become a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to cultivate connections with faculty members, which proved to be enormously beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary takeaway is to leverage the provided support—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my initial year, I’ve come to understand that the trepidation I felt before entering university—and even throughout it—was often unfounded. With a plethora of support options available from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to juggle stressors such as exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
To anyone gearing up to start university, my message is straightforward: take that plunge, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it. You’ll find your niche, just as I did, and you’ll evolve in ways you never expected.
