**Thoughts on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with a blend of anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the journey that awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone with a naturally shy and reserved demeanor, plunging into such a fresh and demanding atmosphere felt daunting. However, reflecting on this past academic year reveals a period of personal development, obstacles, and remarkable instances of happiness. So, what insights have I gained from this experience, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the beginning of my university experience was the challenge of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely that this is one of your foremost worries as well. On the very first day of my accommodation move-in, only a few days before lectures commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the most significant friendships of my life. These bonds have come to feel like a second family, both within my discipline and across the university. What was the turning point? It all began with taking small initiatives—striking up casual conversations with fellow students who were feeling similarly.

What I’ve come to understand is that taking an initial leap of faith at the beginning of the year pays off. If you’re not ready or don’t feel at ease right away, that’s perfectly fine! Universities like Imperial present numerous icebreaker activities and chances to mingle with others. Above all, I realized that being authentic is essential. With a diverse mix of individuals at university, you will undoubtedly discover others who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Demands

Another significant challenge I faced was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the subjects. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first term to the subsequent one felt even more strenuous. Being in such a high-pressure academic setting can sometimes undermine your self-esteem—you may find yourself comparing your progress to that of others and feeling inadequate.

What assisted me during these trying times was acknowledging that I was not alone. Everyone else was grappling with similar struggles, and if I didn’t grasp a topic, the likelihood was that others were in the same boat. The most critical lesson I internalized during my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether it’s from fellow students or faculty members, reaching out for assistance can make an enormous difference.

### The Outstanding Support Staff

On the topic of support, the staff within the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely desire to see students thrive and are acutely aware of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and expressed understanding of our difficulties.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support offered until the conclusion of the year, I regret not doing so earlier. One of the best choices I made was stepping into the role of a year well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to cultivate relationships with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My paramount takeaway from this? Fully utilize the available support systems—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

In retrospect, this year has imparted considerable knowledge. I’ve realized that the anxiety I felt before and during my university journey was often unwarranted. There is an abundance of resources and individuals ready to support you, whether they be staff, peers, or friends. I’ve also come to understand that I am never genuinely alone, and that it’s feasible to experience joy even amid the strains of exams and deadlines.

This inaugural year has been a voyage of growth, resilience, and exploration, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead as I progress in my studies within Materials Science and Engineering.
