**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this fresh chapter felt daunting. However, reflecting on the previous academic year, I recognize it as a time of substantial personal development, obstacles, and countless delightful moments. So, what have I discovered, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Friendship Dilemma
One of the most daunting parts of beginning university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be a significant worry for you. On my first day in student housing, just before the term started, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, far too anxious to venture out and engage with others. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships in my life.
These friendships have come to feel like a second family to me, both within the university and my program. What facilitated this progress? It all began with casual conversations and connecting with others who shared my feelings. My most significant lesson? Take that leap of faith at the year’s onset. Even if you feel unprepared, don’t fret—there will be a plethora of icebreaker events and chances to meet new faces. Most importantly, be true to yourself. With so many diverse individuals at the university, you’re sure to encounter those who align with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the course demands and the intricacies of the subject matter was another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was pronounced, and the jump from the first term to the second was even more significant. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities, particularly when observing others studying and questioning if you are keeping pace.
What assisted me in managing this transition? Firstly, I reminded myself that everyone was experiencing similar challenges. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely that others were too. The secret is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of support, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the staff in the Materials department are. They are genuinely invested in students’ success and show understanding towards our struggles. Throughout the academic year, they maintained transparent communication with us and were always prepared to tackle our worries.
Even though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until late in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold moves I made at the start, and it proved to be extraordinarily fulfilling. It enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which became invaluable. Whether through formal positions or informal chats, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the best steps you can take for yourself. My recommendation? Fully utilize the available support systems—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often baseless. With the abundant support available from both faculty and peers, I’ve come to understand that I am never genuinely alone. I’ve also discovered how to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and fun.
Looking back, I recognize how far I’ve progressed since those initial uncertain days. University has been a voyage of self-improvement, and I eagerly anticipate what the future may hold as I continue my education in Materials Science and Engineering.
