**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty regarding what the future held. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unknown seemed intimidating. However, reflecting back now, I recognize a year that was transformative—filled with growth, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment. So, what insights did I gain, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might be experiencing similar fears. During my first day of moving into my accommodation, just prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve made some incredible friends who have become like a second family.

How did this transformation occur? It commenced with light conversations and connecting with others who were experiencing the same feelings as me. I discovered that taking the initiative to engage with others early on is essential. If you aren’t ready immediately, don’t fret—there are numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is crucial. With such a diverse environment at Imperial, you’re certain to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Facing the Academic Shift
Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of university-level study was another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even greater. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or question your competence when you observe others seemingly excelling.

What assisted me during these times was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that your peers are as well. The most valuable lesson I acquired in my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Be it from classmates or faculty, reaching out for help can significantly alter your experience.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about your success and understand the hurdles students encounter. They encourage open communication throughout the academic year and are always ready to assist.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Early in the year, I took a proactive step by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to foster connections with staff members. This experience proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can immensely enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support systems provided to you—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve recognized that many of the anxieties I had—both pre-university and during it—were unnecessary. With a diverse range of support options from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has equipped me with the ability to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and fun.

Ultimately, my inaugural year at Imperial has been a path of self-discovery, personal growth, and meaningful connections. If you’re on the verge of beginning your own university journey, understand that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious—but also remember that you’ll navigate through it, just as I did.
