**Contemplations on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty as I geared up to begin my journey as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Now, as I contemplate my inaugural academic year, I recognize a phase of significant personal development, obstacles, and indelible experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was the task of making friends. If you’re a prospective student, this may be one of your primary worries as well. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, I spent hours sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve encountered here have become like a second family to me.
How did this transformation occur? It began with taking small actions—starting lighthearted conversations with those who were experiencing the same situation as I was. What I discovered is that making an early leap of faith is essential. If you’re not immediately prepared, don’t stress—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Above all, just remain authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re bound to meet those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the rigorous academic standards of university was yet another considerable challenge. The shift from A-levels to university coursework proved difficult, and the transition from the first term to the subsequent term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities in the presence of high-achieving peers.
What aided me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone is grappling with similar difficulties. If you find yourself struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The essential part is to seek assistance—whether it’s from fellow students or faculty. Learning to ask for help is possibly the most important skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Significance of Supportive Personnel
One of the remarkable aspects of my experience has been the outstanding assistance from the Materials department staff. They truly care about students’ success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they upheld open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns.
Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had done so earlier. Assuming the position of a year well-being representative was a considerable leap for me, but it proved to be a fulfilling experience. It allowed me to forge connections with faculty members, which were tremendously beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My primary takeaway? Utilize the support systems available to you—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I experienced—both before and during university—was often misplaced. With an abundance of support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. I’ve learned to balance the stressors of exams and deadlines with periods of happiness and enjoyment.
This year has been a transformative experience, one that has revealed the importance of stepping outside my comfort zone, seeking help when necessary, and embracing the myriad opportunities around me.
