**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was gearing up to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been quiet and introverted, jumping into the unknown was not something I was used to. Reflecting on my experience now, I recognize that the academic year has been one of development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be one of your primary concerns. On my first day in student housing, a few days before classes started, I spent the entirety of the day sequestered in my room, too fearful to go out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve developed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like family to me.
How did this transformation occur? It all initiated with casual conversations and bonding with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings. The essential lesson here is to take that initial step early on, even if it feels awkward. If you’re not quite ready straight away, don’t worry—there will be numerous icebreaker functions and chances to socialize. Most crucially, just be yourself. With such a rich variety of backgrounds at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
### Addressing the Academic Shift
Another major obstacle was adapting to the increased workload and the intricate nature of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the leap from the first term to the second term appeared even steeper. It wasn’t always simple to maintain self-assurance, especially when surrounded by peers who seemed to have everything under control.
What helped me through this transition was the understanding that everyone was facing similar challenges. If I couldn’t grasp a concept, there’s a good chance others were struggling too. The most valuable lesson I learned was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. This straightforward act of reaching out for support can be crucial in navigating the academic difficulties of your first year.
### Helpful Staff and Well-Being Support
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They truly want us to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication open and were always willing to resolve our issues.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support system until late in the year, I wish I had utilized it earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative at the beginning was a significant step for me, but it turned out to be one of the most rewarding decisions I made. It allowed me to forge connections with staff, which proved to be invaluable. There are various avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My suggestion? Fully leverage the support that is available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the apprehension I felt—both prior to and during university—was mostly unwarranted. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I came to the realization that I was never genuinely alone. I also discovered how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and relaxation.
In retrospect, my first year at Imperial has been a life-changing journey. It’s been a path of self-exploration, growth, and connections, and I am eager to see what lies ahead.
