**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty as I geared up to start my first year as a student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Jumping into this new adventure felt quite intimidating for someone like me—naturally reserved and timid. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments, I can recognize just how life-changing it has been. So, what insights have I gained, and where am I now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting parts of starting university was the idea of forming new friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might resonate with those feelings. On my very first day in my student residence, a few days prior to the start of term, I ended up spending the entire day alone in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known—friends who feel just like family.

How did I achieve this? It all began with tiny steps, like starting light conversations with others who were equally new to this environment. The most important lesson I absorbed is that taking that first step is invaluable. If you’re not quite ready immediately, that’s perfectly fine—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet others. Above all, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re certain to connect with individuals who align with your passions and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the workload and academic expectations was another crucial obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university-level studies was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more demanding. It’s understandable to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities while surrounded by high-achieving peers.

What got me through those challenging moments was the understanding that I wasn’t alone. Everyone else was facing the same obstacles, and it was probable that if I was struggling with a concept, others were too. The essential takeaway? Don’t shy away from seeking help. Whether it’s from your classmates or faculty, asking for assistance is one of the most beneficial skills you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

On the topic of support, the faculty members in the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely care about the success of their students and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open and were always ready to address any issues we had.

Although I didn’t make full use of the available pastoral support until the year was almost over, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was one of the proactive steps I took at the beginning of the year, and it was an excellent choice. It helped me forge meaningful connections with faculty members, which turned out to be incredibly valuable. Whether through formal positions or informal chats, familiarizing yourself with the staff is one of the best choices you can make. My suggestion? Make the most of the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Looking back on this past year, I’ve come to realize that many of the fears I harbored—both before starting university and during my time here—were unfounded. Thanks to the extensive support from both faculty and peers, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to navigate the pressures of exams and deadlines while also cherishing moments of happiness and connection.

To anyone on the verge of starting their own university adventure: embrace the apprehension, take those jumps of faith, and remember that support is always available. You’ve got this!
