**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiousness, apprehension, and uncertainty as I geared up to embark on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Venturing into the unknown was not something that my introverted and timid nature was familiar with. Now, as I reminisce about an academic year brimming with development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can contemplate on the knowledge I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you are an incoming student reading this, you might relate to those feelings. On my first day in the student residence, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, far too daunted to venture out and introduce myself.
Now, reflecting on today, I can proudly mention that I have forged some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever experienced. At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both within my program and throughout the university. It all began with casual conversations and connecting with others who were navigating similar feelings.
What did I take away from this? Making that first leap of faith at the year’s outset is essential. If you’re not quite ready or feel uneasy, no need to fret—there will be many icebreaker activities and chances to meet people. Above all, stay true to yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the academic load and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second was even tougher. It wasn’t always simple to maintain my confidence, particularly when I observed others studying and felt as though I was lagging behind.
What aided me during these times was the reassurance that everyone was experiencing similar struggles. If I didn’t grasp a concept, it was likely that others didn’t either. The crucial lesson? Don’t hesitate to seek help. This is perhaps the most valuable skill to cultivate in your first year. Whether it’s reaching out to classmates or faculty, asking for support is extremely important.
### Helpful Staff and Supportive Guidance
One of the standout features of my first year was the remarkable assistance from the staff in the Materials department. They genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, responding to our issues and providing support.
Although I didn’t fully take advantage of pastoral care until the year’s end, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Making that choice to seek assistance can be transformative. At the beginning of the year, I opted to take a step forward and became a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial.
There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and I highly encourage you to leverage these opportunities. Whether through formal roles or informal encounters, cultivating a relationship with staff can significantly enrich your university experience. My key takeaway? Don’t hesitate to utilize the support that is available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
As I reflect on the past year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university, and even throughout my time here, was often unfounded. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I’ve learned that I am never truly alone.
This year has shown me how to manage stress from exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and enjoyment. It’s been a life-changing journey, one that has fostered my growth both academically and personally.
If you are about to embark on your own university journey, remember to take that leap, embrace your true self, and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. You’ve got this!
