**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Just ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unfamiliar was intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the past year, I recognize a time filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyable moments. But what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current position?
### Forming Friendships: The Initial Major Hurdle
One of the most anxiety-inducing parts of beginning university was the task of making friends. If you’re a potential student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just before the start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, both at the university and within my course.
I’ve established a second family here at Imperial, and it all originated from casual conversations with others who were experiencing the same feelings. So, what did I discover? I learned that making that initial move to meet others is vital. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there’s no need to panic—numerous ice-breakers and events will assist you in connecting with others. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is crucial. With such a diverse range of personalities throughout the university, you’re sure to encounter people who align with your interests and values.
### Confronting the Academic Demands
Another challenge I encountered was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a clear increase from A-levels, and an even more substantial jump between the first and second terms. Being thrust into such a rigorous academic atmosphere can affect your self-esteem, particularly when you observe others studying and feel as though you’re lagging behind.
What aided me in navigating this was the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to comprehend a topic, it’s likely that others are too. The most significant lesson I learned during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty members, don’t hesitate to reach out for support when you require it.
### Assistance from the Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the educators in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want to see you prosper and recognize the challenges students endure. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our issues and providing help. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier.
At the year’s start, I took a bold step and became a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to connect with the staff more closely, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My primary takeaway from this is to fully engage with the support that’s accessible to you. You can never receive too much help!
### Final Reflections
In conclusion, this year has revealed to me that the anxiety I felt before and during university was mostly unwarranted. There are extensive support systems available, from staff to fellow students, to assist you in navigating challenges. I’ve come to understand that I’m never isolated, and it’s entirely possible to have a fulfilling time even while managing the pressures of exams and deadlines.
