**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was preparing to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had typically been introverted and reserved, jumping into such an experience was outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on the academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what exactly did I learn this year, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was meeting new people. For many first-time university students, this is often a major concern, and I was no different. On my first day settling into my housing, just days prior to the term starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all began with a simple chat with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings.
So, what lesson did I take away from this? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year pays off. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be ample ice-breaker events and occasions to bond with others. Above all, I realized that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse group of people in the course and university, you are sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Managing the Academic Demands
Another major challenge was getting accustomed to the academic workload and the complexity of the subject matter. The transition from A-levels was certainly significant, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more evident. Being placed in such a challenging environment can occasionally undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel like you’re falling behind. But here’s the reality: everyone faces similar challenges. If you struggle to grasp a concept, it’s almost certain that your peers do as well. The key takeaway from my first year was the importance of seeking assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members.
### Help from the Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the professors in the Materials department are phenomenal. They truly desire student success and are fully aware of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open communication with us, demonstrating understanding and offering help. I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the year was nearly over, and I regret not doing so earlier.
At the year’s onset, I took a bold step by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position allowed me to connect with the staff on a deeper level, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to cultivate relationships with faculty members, and I strongly encourage taking advantage of these opportunities. My main takeaway from this journey is to capitalize on the support available to you. You can never have excessive assistance!
### Concluding Reflections
In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt prior to and during university was largely misplaced. Numerous support systems are in place, both from faculty and fellow students, to assist you in navigating challenges. I’ve realized that I am never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to find joy even amidst the stress of exams and deadlines.
