**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and ambiguity regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, plunging into the unfamiliar felt outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on the previous academic year, I realize it was a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and how do I view my current status?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

One of the biggest challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student perusing this, it’s likely a concern on your mind as well. On my first day in student accommodation, just a few days before term formally started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself to others. Fast-forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve made some of the most remarkable friends I’ve ever had.

At Imperial, I’ve discovered a close-knit community—friends who have enriched this journey significantly. It all began with a bit of casual conversation with individuals who were equally anxious. What did I come to understand? Taking an early leap of faith truly pays off. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease right away, don’t fret—there will be countless icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, simply be yourself. With a vibrant and diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to connect with those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the intricacy of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was unmistakable, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel inundated and doubt your capabilities when you witness others studying and seemingly thriving.

What helped me navigate this was the understanding that I wasn’t alone in my struggles—everyone was experiencing similar challenges. If I was confused about a topic, chances were that others were grappling with it too. The essential lesson? Don’t be afraid to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial skill to cultivate during your first year. Whether reaching out to peers or faculty, seeking help can significantly impact your experience.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

On the topic of faculty, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the Materials department team is. They genuinely care about student success and fully recognize the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication and displayed understanding towards our difficulties.

Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support resources until the end of the year, I wish I had engaged with them earlier. Early in my year, I took a chance and became a well-being representative, which allowed me to forge connections with staff members. This proved to be an immensely rewarding experience. Whether through formal positions or informal gatherings, becoming acquainted with the staff is one of the best actions you can take for your well-being. My advice? Fully utilize the support and resources available—you can never have too much assistance.

### Key Takeaways

Reflecting on this year, I’ve gained so many insights. I’ve come to recognize that the apprehension I felt before and during the university experience was often unwarranted. With the abundant support from both faculty and fellow students, those anxieties became manageable. I’ve also learned that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s feasible to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

In summary, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey. It has been a path of development, connection, and learning—not solely academically, but personally as well.
