**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fears, and uncertainty about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had been naturally introverted and cautious, stepping into the unfamiliar felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on my first academic year, I recognize it as a period rich with personal development, challenges, and enjoyable experiences. But what insights did I gain, and what is my current situation?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
A major obstacle I encountered initially was the challenge of establishing friendships. Beginning university can seem like a daunting experience, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, you might share the same concern. On my inaugural day in student housing, just before the semester commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too nervous to go out and introduce myself to others.
Now, looking back, I can proudly say I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. The friends I’ve made here have turned into a second family. It only took a bit of bravery to initiate small talks with others who were feeling similar anxieties.
So, what has this taught me? I learned that it’s always worthwhile to take that initial plunge at the year’s start. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease right away, that’s perfectly fine—there are numerous social events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I discovered that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet others who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing Academic Challenges
Another challenge I faced was acclimating to the heavier workload and increased complexity of the subjects. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities, especially upon seeing peers studying and fearing you’re lagging behind.
What really helped me during these tough times was the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, chances are others are too. The most effective action you can take is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty members. Mastering the art of asking for help is arguably the most crucial skill to acquire in your first year.
### The Significance of Support
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The lecturers and tutors are sincerely invested in your success, understanding the hurdles students face. They foster open communication throughout the academic year and are always ready to listen to and address our issues.
Although I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until towards the end of the year, I wish I had utilized it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I made the bold decision to serve as a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can hugely enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support offered to you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that much of the anxiety I experienced—both before starting university and throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the multitude of support options available from staff and fellow students, assistance is always accessible when needed. I’ve learned that I am never truly on my own, and I have figured out how to balance exam stress and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.
This year has been a transformative milestone, and I am eager to discover what lies ahead as I continue my adventure in Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial.
