**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was set to embark on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and cautious, stepping into the unknown was intimidating. Now, reflecting on my first year, I recognize a journey of considerable personal development, obstacles faced, and lots of enjoyable experiences. So, what lessons has this year provided me, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. For many incoming students, this is a primary concern when transitioning to university, and I was no different. On my initial day in student housing, right before the semester kicked off, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever known.

These relationships have evolved into my second family during my time at Imperial. The key was to step outside my comfort zone and initiate casual conversations with others who were experiencing the same uncertainties. The most critical takeaway? Make that move early. Even if you don’t feel prepared or find it uncomfortable, rest assured—there will be countless icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied student body, you’re bound to connect with those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was acclimating to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the coursework. The leap from A-levels to university was evident, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more taxing. It’s easy to feel daunted or doubt your capabilities when observing others studying with confidence.

What made this easier for me was understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re finding it hard to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are, too. The crucial point is to reach out for assistance—be it from classmates or instructors. Developing the skill to seek support is one of the most important lessons you can learn in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of support, the faculty within the Materials department have been remarkable. They truly care about our success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t make the most of the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Stepping into the role of a student well-being representative early on was a significant initiative for me, and it proved to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to form connections with faculty members, which was invaluable. There are various avenues to build relationships with staff, and engaging with them can significantly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Utilize the support offered—you can never receive too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt before and during university was often misplaced. With the support systems available—be it from faculty or peers—help is always within reach. I’ve also come to understand that I’m never truly alone in confronting difficulties. Above all, I’ve learned how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

This year has been a transformative experience, and I am eager to discover what future adventures await as I continue my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
