**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Venturing into the unfamiliar was quite daunting for someone like me who had always been introverted and reserved. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich in growth, challenges, and unforgettable experiences, I can truly appreciate the knowledge I have gained and how far I have progressed.
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting aspects of starting university was the challenge of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be a major worry for you. On my first day in student housing, I spent hours secluded in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can honestly say I’ve developed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. My companions here at Imperial feel like a second family to me.
What changed? It began with casual conversations. I recognized that everyone else was also dealing with their own nerves. Taking that first step to engage with others truly transformed my experience. If you share this concern, don’t fret—numerous ice-breaking events and opportunities to mingle await you. My main takeaway? Stay true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Overcoming Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the demands and complexity of university-level coursework was another considerable challenge. The shift from A-levels to university was striking, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel inundated or question your capabilities, especially when you observe others seemingly excelling.
What assisted me was the realization that everyone faces struggles at various points. If something confuses you, chances are others feel the same way. The essential part is asking for assistance—whether it’s from peers or academic staff. This became one of the most vital lessons I garnered during my first year: don’t be afraid to seek help.
### The Outstanding Support Staff
On the topic of support, the personnel in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us and provided unwavering support.
I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support offered until late in the year, and I wish I had leveraged it sooner. Taking on the role of a year wellbeing representative was a bold move for me, but it ended up being one of the best choices I made. It enabled me to establish connections with staff members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the available resources and support systems—you can never have too much assistance.
### Key Takeaways
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I experienced—both before commencing university and throughout the year—was often misplaced. With ample support from staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve discovered how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while also savoring moments of joy and enjoyment.
In the end, my first year at Imperial has been a remarkable journey of growth, self-discovery, and connection. If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, take the plunge, embrace the hurdles, and remember: you can handle this.
