**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty about the path ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, stepping into the unknown was quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with personal development, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment, I can appreciate how much I’ve gained and how significantly I’ve progressed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the outset of university was forging friendships. If you’re considering this path, this may be a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like an extended family.

How did I achieve this? It began with casual conversations. I discovered that everyone else was experiencing similar jitters. Summoning the courage to connect with others, even in small increments, made a significant impact. If you’re anxious about this, reassure yourself that numerous icebreaker events and chances to interact with others will be available. Most importantly, simply be yourself. With such a varied crowd throughout the course and the university, you’re sure to find like-minded individuals who share your passions and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Obstacles

Another major challenge was adapting to the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was quite stark, and the jump from the first term to the second was even more significant. It’s easy to feel daunted and a little inadequate, especially when witnessing others study with confidence.

What proved beneficial for me was the reminder that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The most crucial point I grasped during my first year is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. This is perhaps the most vital lesson I acquired: never shy away from asking for help when you need it.

### The Significance of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of support, the faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely wish for students to excel and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and offered various avenues for assistance.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had utilized it earlier. Becoming a year well-being representative was a bold move for me, but it turned out to be one of the most rewarding decisions I made. It enabled me to develop connections with faculty members, which was immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My tip? Make the most of the support accessible to you—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this past year, I’ve gained considerable knowledge. The anxiety I felt before and during university was often unwarranted. With the broad spectrum of support available from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone.

Above all, I’ve learned how to balance the demands of exams and deadlines with enjoying my time. University is a period of growth, and although challenges are a given, they are also chances to learn and prosper.

To anyone embarking on this adventure: take the plunge, be authentic, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help. You can do this!
