**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubts about the journey ahead. I was on the verge of starting my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and cautious, plunging into this new experience felt quite intimidating. Looking back now, I recognize a year full of personal development, challenges, and countless unforgettable moments. So, what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current position?

### Cultivating Friendships: Taking the Initial Step
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered early on was the quest for companionship. For numerous newcomers, this can be one of the most anxiety-inducing parts of commencing university. I recall spending my first day in my accommodation, retreating to my room, feeling too daunted by the idea of introducing myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the most remarkable friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who feel like a second family.

What guided me to this point? It all began with modest actions, such as engaging in light conversation with others who shared my nerves. I realized that taking a risk at the start of the year is vital. If you aren’t prepared to jump in immediately, don’t fret—there are ample icebreaker events and activities aimed at helping you connect with others. Most importantly, I found that being authentic is the best strategy. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who relate to you.

### Academic Hurdles: Adopting the Learning Curve
Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another substantial challenge. The shift from A-levels to university-level work was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your abilities when you observe peers studying and seemingly thriving.

What enabled me to manage this was understanding that everyone faces similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The secret is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or instructors. Mastering the art of asking for help is arguably the most essential skill you can acquire during your first year.

### Supportive Faculty: An Invaluable Asset
Speaking of assistance, the staff within the Materials department has been phenomenal. They sincerely care about student success and understand the challenges we face. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and were consistently ready to address our concerns.

While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, I regret not doing so sooner. One of the wisest decisions I made was to become a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to foster connections with staff members, which turned out to be an invaluable opportunity. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, getting acquainted with the faculty is something I strongly endorse. Utilize the resources and support systems available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Main Insights
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With a vast array of support options available, from faculty to fellow students, there’s always someone to rely on. This year has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has shown me how to balance enjoying university life with navigating the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.

As I progress, I’m eager to keep evolving, learning, and maximizing my experiences at Imperial. To any potential students reading this: take the plunge, embrace the obstacles, and remember—you’ve got this!
