**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was ahead. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unfamiliar was quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on my first year, I recognize a time marked by significant personal development, obstacles, and countless joyful experiences. But what lessons did I take away, and where has this path led me?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends

One of the most daunting aspects of entering university was the idea of forging new friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might resonate as one of your primary worries too. On my first day in student housing, a few days prior to the official start of the term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can assertively state that I’ve formed some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve encountered here have become like a second family to me, both within my course and across the campus. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating simple conversations with others who were feeling the same way.

What did I take away from this? Taking that first step of courage at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a varied group of individuals at Imperial, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Hurdles

Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another considerable challenge. The leap from A-levels to university-level study was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even steeper. It’s simple to become overwhelmed or to question your capabilities, especially when you observe others studying and assume they have everything under control.

What assisted me in persevering was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re finding it tough to grasp something, likely, others are too. The essential strategy is to seek assistance—whether from your peers or academic staff. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most important skill you can cultivate in your first year.

### Establishing Connections with Staff

Speaking of assistance, the staff in the Materials department are genuinely remarkable. They truly care about students’ success and are sympathetic to the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our issues and offering guidance.

Even though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I wish I had engaged sooner. One of the wisest decisions I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which turned out to be an invaluable asset. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, getting to know the faculty is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Make the most of the support systems available—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I experienced—both before and during university—was mostly unmerited. Numerous support systems are accessible, from staff to fellow students, to aid you in overcoming challenges. I’ve realized that I’m never completely on my own, and I’ve figured out how to balance pressures such as exams and deadlines with enjoyable and fun moments.

Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a life-changing journey. It’s been a path of development, resilience, and connection, and I eagerly anticipate what the future brings.
