**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt regarding the journey that was about to unfold. I was on the verge of embarking on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had traditionally been shy and introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar felt quite overwhelming. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can contemplate the lessons learned and the distance I’ve traveled.
### Conquering the Fear of Socialising
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered early in my journey was the task of making friends. If you’re considering attending, this may also be a major concern for you. On my first day at the student accommodation, just a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
The pivotal moment arrived when I gathered the courage to initiate small talk with fellow students who were experiencing the same feelings as I was. Those brief exchanges ultimately resulted in the formation of a second family here at Imperial. My recommendation? Take that adventurous step at the beginning of the year. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse student body, you’re sure to find individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Challenge
Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift between the first and second terms felt even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or question your skills when observing others studying and wondering if you measure up.
What enabled me to manage these emotions was the understanding that I was not alone. Everyone was confronting the same challenges, and if I was struggling to understand something, it was likely that others were too. The essential takeaway here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from your classmates or faculty, requesting help is one of the most crucial abilities to cultivate during your first year.
### The Significance of Supportive Staff
On the topic of staff, the Materials Science department at Imperial is remarkable. The lecturers and support personnel genuinely wish for students to thrive and understand the difficulties we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication with students throughout the academic year and are always eager to assist.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support that was accessible to me until late in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative from the beginning helped me forge connections with faculty, which proved to be invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal interactions, establishing rapport with your lecturers and tutors can significantly enhance your experience. My primary insight? Make the most of the resources and assistance available to you—you can never have too much support.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiousness I felt—both prior to and during university—was frequently unfounded. With the backing of staff, peers, and the wider university community, those fears became manageable. I’ve understood that I’m never truly on my own and it is possible to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
This year has been a transformative journey of personal development, and I’m eager to uncover what lies ahead as I continue my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
