**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubt about my future. I was gearing up to commence my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been somewhat introverted, plunging into this new journey felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and remarkable memories. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
A major challenge I encountered was the quest to make friends. For numerous incoming students, this is among the primary concerns regarding university life. I recall my first day of moving into my accommodation, which was just a few days before the semester started. I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known.
At Imperial, I have discovered a second family—friends who understand my journey and stand by me through thick and thin. All it took was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating small dialogues with other newcomers.
So, what did I take away from this? Taking that essential first step at the beginning of the year is vital. If you’re feeling hesitant or uncomfortable, fear not—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Above all, be yourself. With such a diverse population at Imperial, you’re sure to find people who connect with you.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the coursework and the heightened level of difficulty. The transition from A-levels to university was apparent, and the shift from the first to the second term proved to be even more demanding. It’s all too easy to feel daunted or doubt your capabilities amid a group of high-achievers.
What aided me through this was the understanding that everyone else is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, others likely are too. The crucial point is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to reach out for help is arguably the most important skill to cultivate during your first year.
### Establishing Relationships with Faculty
In terms of support, the staff within the Materials department are fantastic. They sincerely want students to thrive and are compassionate regarding the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our issues and providing advice.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until late in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. At the start of the year, I took a courageous step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. Whether through official roles or informal chats, getting to know the staff is one of the smartest moves you can make for yourself. My key takeaway? Utilize the available support—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the fears I held—both prior to and during university—were baseless. With the abundant support from staff and fellow students, there is always someone to turn to. This year has shown me that I’m never truly isolated and that balancing academic demands with enjoyable moments is attainable.
For anyone getting ready for university, my advice is straightforward: welcome the challenges, take those leaps of faith, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help. You’ll grow in ways you never thought possible and create enduring memories.
