**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A mere ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed in feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my first year as a student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unknown felt quite intimidating. Now, in retrospect, I can see a year filled with personal development, challenges, and many unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

Among the many daunting challenges I faced at the beginning of university was the task of making new friends. This concern is common for many prospective students. On my first day in student housing, a few days prior to the official start of term, I found myself spending the entire day in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.

The secret? Taking that first step. Initiating conversations with fellow students who were in similar situations helped me to forge genuine connections. As time went on, these friendships evolved into what feels like a second family here at Imperial. If you’re anxious about meeting new people, keep in mind that there are numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to socialize. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. With the rich diversity at university, you are sure to encounter individuals who share your interests and values.

### Facing Academic Challenges Head-On

Adapting to the academic demands and the complexity of the course material was another substantial challenge. The leap from A-levels to university studies was quite evident, and the transition between the first and second terms was even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or question your abilities when surrounded by exceptionally talented peers.

What aided me in navigating these difficulties was the understanding that I wasn’t alone in this experience. Everyone was confronting similar challenges, and if I was struggling with a concept, it was likely that others were too. The most important lesson I learned was the importance of seeking help—whether from classmates or faculty. Asking for assistance is not a sign of weakness; it’s an essential skill that can significantly impact your first year.

### Cultivating Relationships with Supportive Faculty

One of the most remarkable elements of my journey has been the extraordinary support offered by the Materials Science faculty. They sincerely care about students’ success and understand the obstacles we face. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing any concerns we voiced.

While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until near the end of the year, I do wish I had engaged with it sooner. Serving as a well-being representative for my year was a significant leap for me, but it ended up being one of the best choices I made. It enabled me to forge valuable connections with faculty members. There are many avenues to interact with staff, and I highly suggest making the most of these opportunities. The support they can provide can truly transform your experience.

### Key Takeaways

As I reflect on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I felt—both before entering university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the abundant support from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with enjoyable moments.

If I could impart one piece of advice to new students, it would be this: take that leap of faith. Whether it’s introducing yourself to others, asking for support, or stepping outside your comfort zone, these small actions can lead to remarkable growth and unforgettable experiences.
