**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I prepared to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Having always been quiet and introverted, plunging into university life felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year punctuated by personal growth, obstacles, and lots of enjoyment, I can affirm it has been a life-changing journey. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. Starting at university can be a lot to handle, and if you’re a future student reading this, you might worry about it as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, just prior to the term’s start, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to today, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships ever—friends who have become like a second family. All it took was a bit of casual conversation with individuals who were experiencing similar feelings. What’s the key lesson I learned? Take that bold step early on. Even if you don’t feel comfortable or prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to bond with others.

Above all, be true to yourself. With the diverse community at the university, you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the heavy workload and the intricate nature of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the leap from the first term to the second was even tougher. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you measure up.

What aided me through this period was the understanding that everyone shares the same experience. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely that others are struggling too. The essential action is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or faculty members. Developing this skill is perhaps the most important in your first year.

### The Value of Support

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors genuinely wish for your success and truly understand the challenges students encounter. They maintain ongoing communication throughout the year, addressing any concerns we bring forward.

Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until the end of the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Becoming a year well-being representative was one of the proactive steps I took at the beginning of the year, and it proved to be a wonderful choice. It helped me cultivate connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable.

There are various ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal—you can never receive too much assistance!

### Concluding Thoughts

This year has shown me that the anxiety I felt prior to starting and even during university was often unwarranted. With the abundant support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to manage the pressures of exams and deadlines while also making room for moments of joy and laughter.

Looking back, I’m proud of my progress, and I eagerly anticipate what’s next. To anyone gearing up for their own university adventure: take the plunge, seek help, and remember to savor the journey!
