**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A little less than a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my first-year experience in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As an individual who had always been introverted and quiet, venturing into this new frontier felt dramatically outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with personal growth, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I recognize just how much I’ve evolved. So, what insights did this year impart, and where do I find myself now?

### Forming Friendships: Taking the Plunge
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered at the outset of university was making new friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might be one of your primary concerns too. On my first day at student housing, just days ahead of the official start of term, I spent the whole day concealed in my room, too shy to venture out and say hello. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships of my life—friends who genuinely feel like family.

What shifted? It all began with casual conversations and connecting with others in similar situations. I discovered that making an early leap of faith was essential. If you’re not entirely ready, no need to stress—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, I realized that being authentic is the best strategy. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re likely to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Confronting the Workload
Another major challenge was adapting to the rigorous workload and the heightened complexity of the subjects. The transition from A-levels to university was quite striking, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more severe. It was not always simple to maintain confidence, particularly when I compared myself to peers who appeared to have everything under control.

What aided me during this phase was the understanding that everyone was experiencing similar struggles. If I found something difficult to grasp, it was likely that others were grappling with it too. The central lesson was learning to seek assistance—be it from classmates or faculty. In my opinion, this is one of the most critical insights of the first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.

### Assistance from Faculty
On the subject of support, the faculty in the Materials Science department have been phenomenal. They truly want students to thrive and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and providing direction.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support options until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Volunteering as a year well-being representative was one of the proactive steps I took early on, and it turned out to be an amazing choice. It enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty, which proved immensely beneficial. There are many avenues to engage with staff, and I strongly encourage making the most of these chances. The support they offer can significantly change your experience.

### Insights Gained
In retrospect, this year has imparted valuable lessons. The anxious feelings I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—were frequently uncalled for. With the extensive support accessible from faculty and peers, I realized I was never truly isolated. I also learned how to manage the stress of examinations and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and relaxation.

To summarize, my inaugural year at Imperial has been a voyage of self-discovery, resilience, and connection. If you’re on the brink of beginning your own university journey, remember that feeling anxious is completely normal. Embrace that leap, stay true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. You’ve got this!
