**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I set out on a journey that was as exhilarating as it was daunting. As a first-year student beginning my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London, I was filled with anxiety, doubts, and a sense of uncertainty regarding the future. For someone who has always been introverted, venturing into new territory felt quite intimidating. In hindsight, I recognize a year that was truly transformative—filled with growth, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the idea of forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my first day in the dorms, I found myself spending hours secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently assert that I’ve formed some of the deepest friendships I’ve ever known.

The pivotal moment? Taking that first step. Engaging in conversation with someone else in a similar situation—whether through casual chatter or connecting over common experiences—helped me establish a second family here at Imperial. If you find yourself feeling apprehensive, fear not! The university provides numerous ice-breaker events and chances to meet others. The essential thing is to be genuine. With such a varied community, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with you.

### Facing the Academic Obstacles

Another notable challenge was adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was distinctly apparent, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. At times, it was easy to feel inundated or doubt my capabilities, particularly when measuring myself against my peers.

What aided me in navigating these challenges was recognizing that everyone faced similar struggles. If I found something confusing, it was likely that others did too. The most important takeaway I gathered during my first year was the importance of seeking help—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Asking for assistance isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s an essential skill that can significantly impact your experience.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

A highlight of my experience has been the exceptional support provided by the Materials department staff. They genuinely care about students’ success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us, addressing our concerns and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t fully tap into the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had utilized it sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was yet another leap of faith that proved beneficial. It enabled me to foster connections with staff members, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through formal positions or informal interactions, getting acquainted with the faculty is one of the best decisions you can make for your well-being. They are there to support you, so make the most of the resources and assistance they extend.

### Key Insights

Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during university—was often unwarranted. There exists a vast array of support, from staff to fellow students, that can help alleviate those feelings. I’ve come to realize that I am never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to manage the stress of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and enjoyment.

This year has been one of remarkable personal development. From overcoming my initial fears to embracing the trials of university life, I’ve made significant progress. If you’re about to embark on your own adventure, remember to take that leap, seek assistance when necessary, and most importantly, be true to yourself.
