**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Back in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about my future. I was about to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unknown was far outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating obstacles I confronted was the challenge of forming new friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might resonate with this concern. On the first day in student housing, just before the term started, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself. Now, looking back, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the most cherished friendships—friends who have become like a second family.

What facilitated my journey to this point? It began with small actions, like engaging in light conversations with others who were also feeling uncertain. I realized that taking early steps is vital in overcoming that initial fear. If you’re not quite ready, that’s perfectly okay—there are numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I came to understand that being your authentic self is the finest method. With such a rich mix of individuals at Imperial, you are sure to discover those who truly resonate with you.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the curriculum. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the difference from the first term to the second was even more significant. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities when surrounded by such accomplished peers.

What helped me through those times was recognizing that I wasn’t the only one facing these hurdles. Everyone was tackling similar obstacles, and if something wasn’t clear to me, it likely wasn’t for others as well. The key takeaway? Don’t be afraid to seek assistance. Whether it comes from fellow students or educators, asking for help is one of the essential skills to cultivate during your first year.

### Cultivating Relationships with Supportive Faculty

On the topic of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is remarkable. The lecturers and support staff sincerely want students to excel and are compassionate regarding the challenges we encounter. They maintain clear lines of communication and are always eager to assist.

I did not fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until the year’s end, and I regret not doing so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I made a bold move by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be extremely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My greatest lesson? Fully utilize the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

In retrospect, this year has shown me that the apprehension I felt before starting university—and even throughout the year—was often misplaced. With the extensive support available, from staff to fellow students, I was never truly alone. I’ve learned to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

As I progress, I carry with me the assurance that obstacles can be surmounted, friendships can thrive, and true growth occurs when you venture beyond your comfort zone.
