**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Venturing into the unknown was not something my introverted self was used to. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable moments, I realize how impactful this experience has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s likely that this is one of your foremost worries too. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet fellow students.
Fast forward to now, and I’m proud to say I’ve formed some of the strongest friendships of my life. These relationships have become my second family here at Imperial, beginning from simple conversations with others who were just as anxious as I was.
What did I take away from this? Taking that initial leap of faith at the start of the year is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared or comfortable, that’s perfectly fine—there will be myriad icebreaker activities and chances to bond with others. Most importantly, remain true to yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’ll definitely find individuals who resonate with your passions and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major hurdle was adapting to the academic demands and heightened difficulty of the coursework. The transition from A-level studies to university was stark, and the difference between the first and second terms felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you witness others studying and assume they’re faring better than you.
What aided me during these moments of uncertainty was acknowledging that everyone else faces similar challenges. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, others likely are too. The key is to ask for assistance—whether from fellow students or instructors. Learning to seek help is arguably the most beneficial skill you can cultivate during your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials Department have been exceptional. They genuinely seek to facilitate students’ success and are compassionate regarding the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us, addressing our issues and providing guidance.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until late in the year, and I wish I’d done it earlier. At the start of the year, I made a bold move by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster relationships with staff members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. Whether through formal roles or casual encounters, familiarizing yourself with the staff is one of the most rewarding things you can do. My key takeaway? Make the most of the aid and resources available to you—you can never have excessive support.
### Insights Gained
This year has revealed to me that the anxiety I felt prior to and during university was largely unfounded. With ample support from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while also savoring moments of happiness and enjoyment.
Looking back, I recognize how much I’ve matured—not just in academics, but also personally. Beginning university was a venture into the unknown, but it was a venture that was undeniably worthwhile.
