**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been somewhat introverted, plunging into this new experience felt quite daunting. Looking back now, I recognize that the academic year has been life-changing—characterized by personal development, hurdles, and abundant happiness. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the biggest hurdles I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might share similar worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation—just days before the official start of term—I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Now, looking back at today, I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the best friendships I could have hoped for. At Imperial and within my course, I’ve discovered a second family. It all began with small actions—starting light conversations with fellow students who were experiencing similar feelings.
What did I gain from this? Taking that initial leap at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared or don’t feel at ease right away, that’s perfectly fine! There are numerous icebreaker sessions and chances to interact with others. Most importantly, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Demands
Another considerable obstacle was adapting to the coursework and the complexity of the material. The shift from A-level studies to university was quite stark, and the transition from the first to the second term felt even more formidable. Being immersed in such a rigorous setting can occasionally undermine your confidence, especially when observing others focused on their studies and feeling as if you’re lagging.
What assisted me was recognizing that everyone faces similar challenges. If you’re grappling with a concept, likely, others are as well. The crucial point is to seek assistance. This may be the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year—don’t hesitate to reach out to classmates or faculty for guidance.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of faculty, I can’t stress enough how remarkable the Materials Science department is. The staff genuinely desires for students to thrive and understand the obstacles we encounter. They’re compassionate and maintain open communication throughout the year to tackle any concerns we may have.
I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support offered until the conclusion of the year, and I regret not utilizing it earlier. Early on, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are many avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My biggest insight here? Take full advantage of the support structures in place for you—you can never have too much assistance!
### Knowledge Gained
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve discovered that the anxiety I felt—both before beginning university and during my time here—was frequently unfounded. There are numerous support systems in place, from faculty to peers, that can help alleviate those concerns.
This year has revealed that I’m never truly isolated, even during stressful times such as exams and deadlines. More significantly, it has taught me how to strike a balance between diligent work and enjoyment, fully embracing my university journey.
To anyone who is about to embark on their own path at Imperial or elsewhere: welcome the challenges, take those leaps of courage, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You’ll evolve in ways you never thought possible.
