**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the cusp of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quite introverted, jumping into this new phase felt challenging. Now, reflecting on a year of academic growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment, I can assert that it has been a life-changing experience. But what insights have I gained, and how have I progressed?

### Conquering the Fear of Forming Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was building friendships. This is often a major concern for many incoming students, and I was certainly included. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to go out and introduce myself to my peers.

Flash forward to today, and I can confidently say that I’ve formed some of the strongest friendships of my life. My classmates have turned into my second family, not only within the program but throughout the university. What aided me in reaching this point? Taking that initial jump and engaging in casual conversations with others who felt just as I did.

So, what did I discover? First, it’s always beneficial to step out of your comfort zone early, even if it feels intimidating. If you’re not ready to engage right away, don’t stress—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with fellow students as the year unfolds. Secondly, the best approach is to simply be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re likely to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the increased workload and the tougher material. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the transition from the first to the second term felt especially tough. It’s easy to feel daunted or doubt your abilities when observing peers studying and grasping concepts more effortlessly.

What assisted me in managing this? Reminding myself that everyone faces similar struggles. If I was confused by something, it was likely that others were too. The essential takeaway from this experience was to reach out for help—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to ask for support could very well be the most crucial skill to acquire in your first year.

### The Importance of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department has been outstanding. They genuinely care about our success and empathize with the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication, addressing our issues and providing valuable guidance.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until late in the year, but looking back, I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. Early on, I made the decision to become a well-being representative for my year, a position that allowed me to interact more closely with the staff. Cultivating these relationships turned out to be invaluable, and I’d urge every student to leverage the resources and support systems at their disposal. You can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
This year has taught me that the anxiety I experienced—both before my university journey and during my time here—was largely unwarranted. With the abundant support from both staff and fellow students, I discovered I was never genuinely alone.

More importantly, I learned how to juggle the demands of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and enjoyment. University is equally about personal development and pleasure as it is about academics, and embracing both dimensions has made my first year an unforgettable journey.

To anyone embarking on their own path, remember: take the plunge, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You’ve got this!
