**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what awaited me. I was about to begin my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been on the shy side, stepping into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Now, reflecting on a year characterized by personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences, I can confidently assert it was a life-changing journey. So, what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current stance?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was establishing friendships. For many new students, this is a primary concern about commencing university—and I was no different. On my first day in student housing, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the finest friendships of my life. These bonds have become my second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations and connecting with others in similar situations.

What did I take away from this? Taking a chance early on is essential. If you’re not prepared or comfortable initially, don’t stress—there are countless icebreaker activities and chances to socialize. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to meet those who align with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the demands and academic rigors was yet another challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was pronounced, and the change from the first term to the second felt even more substantial. It’s easy to become daunted or question your capabilities when observing others studying and thriving.

What aided me in overcoming this was recognizing that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely others are as well. The crucial point is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the teaching staff. Learning to seek help is potentially the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year.

### Welcoming Staff and Pastoral Assistance

Speaking of support, the personnel in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely want students to flourish and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and addressed our queries.

Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, I wish I had recognized its importance earlier. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was a significant step for me, but it ultimately proved to be one of my most rewarding choices. It allowed me to foster connections with staff members, which became invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My major takeaway? Make the most of the resources available to you—one can never have excessive support.

### Insights Gained

This year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before starting university, and even throughout the year, was frequently unmerited. With the extensive support available from staff and peers, I came to understand that I was never truly isolated. I also mastered the art of managing stress from exams and deadlines while also embracing moments of enjoyment and laughter.

Looking back, I recognize how much I have evolved—not only in my academic pursuits but also personally. University is a journey of personal evolution, and while it may appear intimidating at the outset, it is brimming with chances to flourish, connect, and uncover your true self.
