**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, trepidation, and doubt regarding what was to come. I was about to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, venturing into the unfamiliar seemed a formidable task. Now, reflecting on the preceding academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, thrilling challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and how do I perceive my current situation?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forming new friendships. For many incoming students, this is among their top concerns about beginning university, and I was no different. On my first day in student accommodation, merely days before classes officially started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve met here have become my second family, all beginning with small interactions—like initiating conversations with others who felt the same way I did.
What did I discover? Taking that first step is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—there will be plenty of ice-breaker activities and chances to meet new people. Above all, just be yourself. With such a diverse group at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Demands
Another significant adaptation was getting used to the workload and the heightened complexity of the course content. The transition from A-levels to university was considerable, and the shift from the first to the second term proved to be even more challenging. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others around you appearing to flourish.
What assisted me during these times was the understanding that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you find yourself struggling to grasp a concept, chances are others are, too. The crucial part is to reach out for assistance—whether from your classmates or the teaching staff. Learning to seek help may be the most beneficial lesson I took from my initial year.
### Developing Connections with Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the staff within the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely wish for students to excel and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open and were consistently willing to listen to our concerns.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until late in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Initially, I took the bold step of becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to forge connections with faculty members. This experience turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and I strongly encourage taking advantage of such opportunities. The support they provide can truly make a significant difference.
### Essential Takeaways
Looking back on the past year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to beginning university and in my initial months—was mostly unfounded. With the extensive support provided by staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone.
This year has shown me how to manage the pressures of exams and deadlines while still enjoying moments of happiness and fun. It has highlighted the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone, seeking help when necessary, and welcoming the opportunities that arise.
To anyone gearing up for their first year in university: take that plunge, be authentic, and don’t hesitate to rely on the support networks surrounding you. You’re not undertaking this journey alone, and it is one filled with growth, education, and unforgettable moments.
