**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, apprehension, and self-doubt as I prepared to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into the unknown was not something I was familiar with. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I can assert that it has been a life-changing experience. But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was building new friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might be experiencing similar worries. On my inaugural day in student accommodation, just prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too fearful to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

I’ve found a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with brief conversations with individuals who were just as anxious as I was. What did I come to understand? Taking that first bold step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared or comfortable immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaker events and chances to connect with others. Above all, stay true to yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the intricacies of the course content. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when you observe others studying and apparently thriving.

What assisted me the most was realizing that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re grappling with comprehending something, it’s likely that others are too. The essential factor is to reach out for help—whether from your peers or the teaching staff. Learning to seek assistance is perhaps the most crucial skill you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Staff
On the topic of support, the personnel in the Materials department have been exceptional. They sincerely wish to see students succeed and are understanding of the hurdles we face. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication with us and addressed our worries.

Although I didn’t fully avail myself of the pastoral support services until later in the year, I wish I had sought assistance earlier. In the beginning, I took a risk by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to forge connections with staff members. This turned out to be an invaluable experience. Numerous ways exist to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My main takeaway? Utilize the resources and assistance available to you—you can never have excessive support.

### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the anxiety I felt before commencing university, and even during the year, was largely unmerited. With the vast array of support accessible from both staff and fellow students, I’ve come to realize that I’m never truly isolated. More importantly, I’ve learned how to balance enjoying life while managing the unavoidable pressures of exams and deadlines.

Looking back, I view a year filled with growth, resilience, and unforgettable moments. For anyone on the verge of initiating their university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take that leap, embrace the challenges, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. You’ll be astonished at how much you can accomplish in just one year.
