**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed with nerves, trepidation, and uncertainties about what awaited me. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and cautious, plunging into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on this past academic year, I perceive it as a time of substantial growth, challenges, and memorable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
A major source of apprehension at the onset of university was the challenge of forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely a concern you share. On my first day of moving into my residence—just days before the term officially commenced—I spent the entire day cocooned in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve encountered here have become like a second family to me. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others who were equally nervous.
So, what have I gleaned? I discovered that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you’re not feeling prepared or at ease, that’s perfectly okay—there are ample icebreaker events and avenues to connect with fellow students. Most crucially, I learned that being authentic is essential. With a diverse array of individuals across the university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the demands and complexity of university-level studies was another significant challenge. The shift from A-levels to university represented a considerable leap, and the jump from the first term to the second felt even more substantial. It wasn’t always straightforward to maintain confidence, especially when I observed others studying and questioned my own abilities.
What assisted me through those tougher times was the understanding that everyone was facing similar struggles. If I was puzzled by a concept, the likelihood was that others were too. The most pivotal lesson I learned during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty, reaching out can profoundly change your experience.
### The Caring Faculty
Speaking of the faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is truly impressive. The lecturers and support staff genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They ensure open channels of communication with us throughout the academic year, responding to our concerns and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the academic year’s conclusion, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was one of my best choices. It enabled me to forge valuable connections with faculty members. There are numerous ways to interact with staff, and I highly recommend seizing these opportunities. My key takeaway? Never hesitate to utilize the support at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was often unfounded. With a wealth of support from both faculty and fellow students, I realized I was never genuinely alone. I also learned how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
This first year has been a transformative journey, rich with personal development, new friendships, and priceless lessons. If you’re on the verge of starting your own university adventure, remember that while it might appear overwhelming, it’s also an extraordinary chance to grow, learn, and flourish.
