**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and unpredictability about the future. I was about to start my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been somewhat introverted and cautious, stepping into the unknown felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on this past academic year, I recognize a time of tremendous personal development, hurdles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

### Conquering the Anxieties of Friendship
A major hurdle I encountered was the struggle to form friendships. Beginning university can be quite intimidating, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my very first day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I ended up spending the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve encountered here have become akin to a second family, and it all commenced with brief discussions with others who were equally apprehensive.

What did I discover? Making that first move to engage with others is invariably rewarding. Even if you feel ill-prepared, there will be numerous icebreakers and activities designed to facilitate connections. Above all, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to encounter individuals who share your passions and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Transition
Another considerable challenge was adjusting to the heightened workload and complexity of university-level material. The leap from A-levels to university was evident, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more significant. It wasn’t always simple to maintain confidence, particularly when surrounded by classmates who appeared to have everything under control.

What aided me during this time was coming to understand that everyone was experiencing similar struggles. If I found something perplexing, it was likely that others did too. The crucial takeaway here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from peers or teaching staff, reaching out for help is one of the most vital skills to cultivate in your initial year.

### The Value of Support Networks
On the topic of support, the staff within the Materials department have been phenomenal. They sincerely aspire for students to thrive and possess empathy towards the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, attending to our concerns and providing guidance.

While I didn’t fully embrace the pastoral support available until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative. This position granted me the chance to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My most significant takeaway? Utilize the resources and support networks at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained
In reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I harbored before and during my time at university were unwarranted. There is an abundance of support available, from both staff and fellow students, to help you traverse the obstacles. This year has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has illustrated how to balance the stresses of exams and deadlines with joyful and fun moments.

Embarking on university life may seem like a plunge into the unknown, but it also presents an extraordinary opportunity for development, connection, and exploration. If you’re about to initiate your own journey, embrace the challenges, be true to yourself, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. You may be astonished by how much you can accomplish.
