**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A decade ago, in October 2022, I experienced a whirlwind of nerves, apprehension, and doubt regarding what was coming next. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who had always been introverted and cautious, plunging into this new chapter felt overwhelming. Now, reflecting on a year of development, obstacles, and enjoyable moments, I can appreciate how transformative this experience has proven to be. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the outset of university was the task of forging friendships. For numerous incoming students, this represents a significant concern, and I was no different. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can assertively declare that I’ve cultivated some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had. The individuals I’ve encountered here have become akin to a second family, and all it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with others who were feeling similarly.

What did I glean from this? Taking a risk at the beginning of the year truly pays off. If you’re not ready or feel uneasy immediately, that’s perfectly fine—numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others will arise. Most importantly, I discovered that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse array of people at university, you’re sure to find others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Adjusting to Academic Demands

Another major obstacle was adapting to the volume of work and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your competence when observing others studying and wondering if you measure up.

What assisted me during those trying moments was the understanding that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If there’s something you don’t grasp, it’s likely others are grappling with it too. The most beneficial step you can take is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or faculty. This is arguably the most significant lesson I internalized in my first year: don’t hesitate to reach out for support.

### Encouragement from the Materials Department

Speaking of support, the personnel in the Materials department have been exceptional. They sincerely desire for students to thrive and are compassionate towards the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and offered guidance whenever needed.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the latter part of the year, I wish I’d engaged with it earlier. At the year’s start, I took the initiative to become a well-being representative. This position enabled me to foster connections with staff, which proved immensely valuable. There are abundant ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university journey. My most significant lesson? Make the most of the resources and help available to you—you can never have too much backing.

### Takeaways

In summary, this year has illuminated for me that the apprehension I experienced prior to and during university was frequently unfounded. With the extensive support options offered by both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. I’ve learned to face challenges, seek help when necessary, and relish the experience even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.

Reflecting back, I take pride in how much I’ve achieved. Starting university was a leap into uncertainty, but it evolved into a journey of personal development, resilience, and unforgettable experiences.
